Welcome ~ SY 2008-2009

Chapel School is proud to continue its tradition of excellence for students in grades 5 through 8. As we prepare our students for high school and beyond, our uniquely small class sizes enable us to partner with parents and guardians to meet the increasingly complex social, physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual needs of today’s ‘tweens’. Our academic and behavioral expectations are high and clear, and our students learn responsibility and accountability in an environment centered by the Grace of God and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

Chapel School’s middle grades are departmentalized and use a modified block schedule. Individual class schedules can be found on teacher pages and information about each area of study can be found under ‘Curriculum’. Core subjects ... Math, Science, Social Studies and English/Language Arts (ELA) ... are taught by teachers specializing in each of those academic areas. Homeroom teachers then cover Wordly Wise 3000 (vocabulary), Peace Education/Religion and Computer Science; while the students work with separate teachers for Physical Education, Art, Music and Spanish.  Multi-media stations are currently accessible for teacher and student presentations; however, one of our primary goals is to install such stations in each middle school classroom.

Organizational Skills

One organizational tool that is unique to Chapel School’s middle grades is the Premier Agenda, a daily planner which enables the students to keep a written log of the work they must complete.  Of course, middle school teacher pages are updated regularly so that students and parent(s)/guardian(s) can double-check what is needed when.  Chapel's middle school teachers also help the students to organize their notes, homework, quizzes, tests and vocabulary with the use of routine binder checks, which better enable the students to manage their work in preparation for mid-term and final exams.

Positive Discipline

The introductory section of the Premier Agenda outlines certain highlights from the Chapel School Student Handbook that are specific to students in Grades 5-8. Worthy of special mention is our self-created Positive Discipline Policy, whereby students who are in class on time, in uniform, prepared with all necessary materials and completed assignments AND respectful of their classmates and teachers are rewarded for their exemplary attitude and behavior. Cooperative students can earn non-uniform days each week, free pizza each month and special recognition each quarter. Patterns of non-compliance can lead to negative consequences (detentions); however, where there is Law (discipline), there is always Gospel (forgiveness) and the opportunity for growth.

At Chapel School, our goal is to help our 5th-8th graders develop good academic habits and become caring and responsible people, so that they successfully bridge that crucial gap be-‘tween’ elementary and high school en route to becoming good citizens.

Overnight Educational Experiences

Each spring, Chapel School students in grades 6-8 participate in Overnight Educational Experiences, exploring Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia/Gettysburg as part of a three-year cycle. As a ‘spiritual treat’, our students are given the opportunity for reflection via itinerary-connected devotions created by our pastors.
